Dad invited everyone who lives on our street to have a party for Christmas. Dad set up a table and chairs in the middle of the street before anyone arrived. It was funny seeing those furniture pieces out of place, removed from the context of a living room or kitchen. Kid’s were playing in the street, and I felt that the chairs felt quite rigid and less approachable for kids so I went inside and got 2 picnic rugs and cushions for them to sit on. They instantly came over. I loved seeing everyone sitting around the table, we all sung ‘Happy Birthday’ to one of the oldest members of our street, Betty. She just turned 80. When Dad was setting it all up I understood a little more that we both have the desire to bring communities together. I like that he brought out chairs from our house. JS
